Travel Abroad: Political Awareness

In an increasingly ’shrinking’ world, more people than ever visit foreign countries. Traveling abroad can be an invaluable experience, and it has a number of positive effects on both the lives of individuals who do it, the locals who interact with foreign travelers, and the relationships between people and nations around the world. However, for these positive effects to occur, travelers must be aware of certain safety issues, and general information about the country they visit.

While neither travelers nor locals may be directly involved with the foreign policies of their respective countries, seemingly remote global issues can impact one while traveling simply because of nationality or ethnicity. More directly, political and cultural upheavals in an area may have a decidedly negative effect on one’s trip.

To maximize the personal experience of traveling abroad, and the impact one’s travels has on the local area, it is wise to have some general idea of the culture and political climate of the intended destination. Don’t rely simply on travel guides or travel marketing materials for this information. Rather than rely on these materials, take the time in the weeks before the trip to read a newspaper or two local to the area you’re traveling to. It’s also a wise step to check travel advisory information from the American, British, and Canadian governments.
